Tivo in safe mode

Can't get Tivo to find my PC.
I believe my PC may be blocking ports TIvo is using.
I tried booting my PC in Safe Mode to see if Tivo would work that way
but when I start Tivo Desktop, Tivo complains TivoBeacon is not running.
How do I start TivoBecon?
I tried going to Windows Explorer and starting it there (right-click and
then Run or Open), but that didn't work.

A pc in safe mode doesn't mean what you think. Starting a pc in
safe mode is like putting yourself in a straitjacket and
handcuffing you to a window so you can't get yourself into
trouble, while a pc starting normally means you can actually go
outside, not just sit drooling by the window...


Start normally. Run tivo desktop. Use the items under the
'server' menu to check the settings and such.

In the past, I have had a problem with Tivo Beacon and various personal
firewalls. To get around the problem, I have done the following:
after Windows has calmed down after a login, Stop and then start the
Tivo Beacon service via either MMC, Services Control Panel or net stop
"Tivo Beacon" followed by a net start "Tivo Beacon".
This seems to work.
If you are using something like McAfee Privacy Service that wants the
user to login to setup a profile, if you are getting the Retry/Cancel
popup from Tivo Server, then login to the firewall/privacy service (or
just wait for it to finish starup) and then retry launching Tivo Server.

The Tivo Beacon is set for automatic start on my machines.
The above steps work on my Win2k box with McAfee Internet Security, but
I have no problems on another machine in the house running WinXP Home,
with the XP firewall enabled. I don't remember what I did there, if I
had to do anything.

Which OS are you running and what version of the Tivo Desktop?

OS = XP/SP2
Tivo? Whatever I downloaded last week

I have no idea what this stuff is. MMC? Services Control Panel?

MMC is Microsoft Management Console.
The Service Control Panel Applet is under Start-->Control Panel and then
assuming you are in category view (I believe that is the default)
Performance and Manintenance-->Administrtive Tools-->Services.
Look for Tivo Beacon in the list and see what it is set for. Stop it
and restart it and then try to start Tivo Server.
You can also get to Services other ways, but this is the easiest to
explain given your response.

You might do best just using the command line and typing
net stop "Tivo Beacon"(enter)
then net start "Tivo Beacon"(enter)

That will stpo and restart the Tivo Beacon service in the quickest
possible way. The double quotes are required because of the space.

As usual with Windows, there's a dozen ways to do the same thing. However,
as far as what is 'easiest', the above method makes an assumption about the
user's configuration that may or may not be true. Right click "My
Computer", click "Manage". Click "Services and Applications" and double
click "Services". Regardless of configuration, this works.

I intentionally avoided that path to services because I have seen more
than one person get too distracted by the rest of what's under that view
of MMC.
This is the way I normally do just about everything.
And this also falls to the same trap you make in your post.
Is My Computer on the desktop, or is it only in the Start Menu. Has
someone taken it out of the Start Menu. Does the user know that he can
right click on things in the start menu. Does the user have the mouse
skill to do it there w/o hitting the wrong thing.
Could have launched services right from the Run line, too.
All this and we still haven't gotten any closer to identifying what
might be causing the OP's problem.
I'm going to drop off this thread with the assumption that there is some
facility on the box (XP's Firewall, or some other similar product) that
isn't going to suddently let Tivo Server or Tivo Beacon do their stuff
w/o a reconfig. And depending on the fw product, uninstall/reinstall
may not cause it to kick back a message asking if it should or shouldn't
let the program open network ports and listen/broadcast for other Tivo.
