Toshiba Laptop RAM

My Toshiba Equium L300- 146 [strike]system unit[/strike] laptop only has a 1GB 2R×16 PC2-5300S-555-12hynix card in the back and the front slot is empty..is this enough to run my lap top or do i have to replace a missing card as my lap top will not turn on ?...thank you gor any help and advice you can give me to resolve this problem.

It should still turn on even if the amount of RAM wasn't sufficient, especially since (I assume) it worked okay before with only 1GB RAM.

Something else is amiss if it won't even turn on.

Is it completely dead, no response at all when you press the power button?
