Toshiba laptop turns on but screen stays black

I have a Toshiba laptop. As I turn it on, the power light turns on and I hear the hard drive rattling. When I connect it to an external monitor, nothing happens (HDMI and VGA tried) I managed to get it to work two times, by holding the power button for 60 seconds, releasing it for 2 seconds (done 4x, of course without battery or adaptor). I installed Windows 7 on it. When I shut it down, there was no way to get it back to work. Is this thing ready for the garbage? Or is there a simple fix for this? (And, removing CMOS battery (which broke off) and then wait didn't do the trick)

When I was able to see something on the screen, yes. But when the screen remains black, no.
