Toshiba laptop won't charge - battery or none, on or off

My Toshiba laptop (Satellite, C655D-S5041) died this morning. It's six years old. It won't hold a charge with or without a battery, on or off. My mom's Lenovo fits my power jack, and mine fits hers. Different equipment, different outlet: it still won't hold a charge. So I'm assuming that it's a hardware problem that I can't fix. I was in the middle of saving stuff to my flash drive when it died, so I didn't get much. I really need my files! Can anyone help me?

You could use your mom's laptop, grab a hard drive enclosure (less than $10 on Amazon), and mount it in Windows. Then copy them to a USB stick. At 6 years old, it is porbably dead. Have you tried to hit the reset button? And usually, plugging it in without the battery will still power on. But if not, then the DC port is gone and will need to be replaced. However, those are usually soldered.

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestions. I took out the battery (with it off) and held the power button for 30-40 seconds, then plugged in the battery and turned it on. Still nothing. Plugging it in registers no green light with or without the battery. I guess the DC port is gone. I've had a hardware problem where the DC port is for about a year. The top part lifts up when I open the lid. I don't know how to fix this. I guess now it doesn't matter. I certainly can't solder anything.

Getting that hard drive enclosure is probably your best bet.

I ordered an external hard drive from Staples ($9) on November 29. It came the following Monday and I saved all my files. But now I have a bigger problem. Check out the latest thread by me in Windows 7.

The DC plug in my particular laptop didn't need to be soldered, just replaced whole. I paid $15 for the part, plus $65 for labor. This wasn't cheap for me, but at least the diagnostic was free.
