Anyone know if the Tracfone GSM phone that they are offering is locked to a
Tracfone SIM? In my area, Tracfone uses Cingular as their "partner" for both
their TDMA and their GSM phones.

My reason for asking is that I'm looking for a cheap (OK, inexpensive)
backup phone in case my "real" Cingular GSM dies on me.

Thanks!

ps Thanks to those that responded to my previous post where my "end" key
stopped working on my Motorola V400. When I took it into my local Cingular
store, they pulled the battery out & put it back in again and the "end" key
has been working ever since! :)

As an alternative, consider an inexpensive phone on eBay.

Yes, both GSM TracFones (Nokia 3390 and Nokia 1100) only use TracFone SIMs.

I just activated a Nokia 1100 TracFone that uses the Cingular network, and
so far I like it. I don't plan to use it for rural coverage. I will always
remember to take the Nokia 5180i TracFone for backup when roaming.

The 3390 & 1100 models are single rate (no roaming) for TracFone.

Getting a TracFone soon? Get an email referral by another TracFone
user *BEFORE* you activate, and you will both get 100 Free Minutes!
What other prepaid plan offers free anytime minutes? TracFone uses
Cingular, Verizon, Alltel, Suncom, and AT&T networks, just to name a few.

.... as backup it makes more sense for me to use a phone that uses a
different carrier & technology - i.e. my regular cell is a Verizon phone and
I use a Cingular prepaid as my backup.
