Trouble connecting my computer to my TV with HDMI cable: computer monitor repeatedly flashes on and off

I’m trying to connect my PC computer to my television using an HDMI cable to use my TV as an external monitor, but my computer monitor flashes on and off repeatedly (with the sound of adding and removing hardware, respectively) as if it recognizes the TV briefly but doesn’t make the “handshake” correctly. The TV occasionally recognizes that the HDMI port is occupied by a computer, but it never puts the computer display on the TV screen. My graphics card outputs DVI (not HDMI), so I use a DVI-to-HDMI adapter and plug the HDMI cable into the adapter.

I know my computer was able to connect to older TVs with an older HDMI cable (not sure which HDMI version the older cable was). Not sure if this is a graphics card, HDMI cable, computer power supply, monitor/TV resolution, or other issue. Would appreciate any thoughts/guidance.

The graphics card doesn't mention HDMI 2.0 which the TV would require to give you UHD. Try setting the resolution to 1080p.
When you connect a PC to a TV the order that you select the input and boot the PC makes a difference. Sometimes the PC has to boot after you select the input sometimes the reverse. It can take 5-10 seconds for the PC to be detected too. Sometimes you have to try it 2 or three times for it to work.

Thanks americanaudiophile. The good news is that I got it to work with 1080p--good suggestion. The bad news is that I can't get it to work with 4K even after upgrading my graphics card (my computer monitor continues to flash on and off repeatedly).

I believe my graphics card supports HDMI 2.0 and 4K, so I'm not sure what's going on--it's working with 1080p, though.

I was able to stop all the flickering by using two displays in Windows (Win10):

With your external HDMI monitor/TV connected, go into Windows Settings and set up a second display (Start/Settings/System/Display). I believe I used the Detect function to do this. Once the second display is established, under Multiple Displays, select "Extend these displays". Then open your browser window and bring up the video you want to play. Grab the entire browser and slide it to the right completely off the window of the 1st display (on your PC) to the 2nd (extended to your external monitor) display. You should be able to run your mouse off the right edge of Screen 1 onto the left edge of Screen 2.

No more flickering for me. Hope it works for you

The problem with the new card may be that doesn't seem to support HDCP 2.2 copyguard which you may need with a TV rather than a 4k monitor.
