Trouble connecting sound system

I recently purchased a record turntable with a pre-amp and set of active speakers, my understanding is that with active speakers i shouldn't need an amplifier. However the turntable has an rca output and the speakers standard positive and negative inputs for speaker wire. Is there any way the 2 can be connected without an amplifier and if not can I connect an amplifier to an active speaker?

If your speakers have +/- terminals for standard speaker wire, then they aren't amplified IMO. What make and model are the speakers?
