tv cable troubles

my school provides us with cable but I cant seem to get it on my tv. I bought the coaxial cable and connected one end to the cable box and the other to my element plasma tv Model: ELEFT222 screen but when i put it to find channels it doesnt find any. They told me to buy a converter box but then i was told that was only to get air channels. How can i access the cable channels?

on tv with cable boxes most time channel 3 or 4 on the tv is used. that the older boxes. on your box make sure the wires are in the right ports. the one to tv out should go to your tv. if the box is working right and is a newer digial box and it on then when your tv does it scan in cable mode it should find a few channels. as this is an apt or room on school grounds make sure the cable line is connected at the school main panel. if it not then the cable box wont work.
