Unable to get volume on my Xbox One

I purchased a refurbished Xbox One 500gb 8 gb w/kinect & headset. We are unable to get volume to the TV from the console. In the settings it says that the HDMI cable must be plugged into the HDMI IN port that goes into a satellite box. We do not have a satellite box and the HDMI OUT port does not provide volume. Any input (ha!) would be greatly appreciated.

Either HDMI out is dead or the HDMI cable is dead/faulty
