Unable to power laptop

I have a 1-year-old ASUS laptop. The power cord doesn't charge the battery. I'm told I need a new motherboard. Isn't that extreme?

It all depends on exactly what is wrong. Bad battery? Bad charger? Bad port, that is soldered on to the motherboard?

Is this still under warranty?
