Unlock 6850 to 6870 then CF with a retail 6870?

Basically, I want to upgrade my system so I can watch youtube videos in 1080p and play skyrim/WoW at max settings without the studder I sometimes get now.

I've seen a few videos of people unlocking their 6950s into 6970s and I'm wondering if I can save a few bucks by buying a 6850 for my CF set-up with a store bought 6870.

As far as I know, the 6850 can NOT be flashed to a 6870. Unlike a 6950 being flashed into a 6970 (unlocks shaders, increases clock speeds), a 6850 being flashed with a 6870 BIOS will only increase clock speeds and WON'T unlock any shaders.

No guarantee that you'll be able to successfully flash the BIOS of the 6850 to match your 6870. Not worth the risk, IMO. Just get another 6870.

I'd recommend a 7770 over a 6870, especially if you use Catalyst 12.7 instead of an older driver.
