Hello, I have a compaq presario 900 (from 2002) with the following configuration :

cpu : amd athlon 1500+
ram : 256 mb PC2100
hdd : 20 gb
grafics card : mobility u1
screen : 15''

my question is if I can upgrade the cpu - I did some googling and found that the cpu is socket-A
Can I put every socket-A cpu I like or do I heve to take something in mind? (perhaps the FSB or Vcore)

What I did to start my upgrade is buying 512 mb ram pc2100 and I also want to buy a larger Hdd

PS 1 : I can't afford buying a new lapton so I want to upgrade it
2 : it's my first post so if I'm doing something wrong tell me

Thanks ! :bounce:

can I upgrade it with this one?

The biggest problem is finding out what the specific chipset can handle in terms of CPU upgrades. ATM, I can hardly find any info about your motherboard. This may be something you can talk to AMD/ATI about through their support.

The other thing you need to consider is whether or not you are actually going to be able to find a CPU that will work. You may want to consider saving your money at this point to get a new system.

well I upraded my memory from 256MB to 768 and the hdd from 20GB to 250GB.
The RAM works fine but with the HDD upgrade I have the following problem:
Every time I the HDD is working the CPU goes up to 90-100% and the whole laptop is VERY slow. Do you know why this could happen?

the new hdd is : WESTERN DIGITAL WD2500BEVE HDD 2.5'' 250GB ATA
the old hdd is : toshiba 20GB, IBM IC25N020ATCS04-0, ATA-5, UDMA-100

I used aida and did a few benchmarks which were I bit weird...

TYPE OF BENCHMAR OLD HDD NEW HDD
CPU MB/S CPU MB/S
LINEAR READ 7% 19 NO RESULT NO RESULT
QUICK LINEAR READ 7% 17.2 NO RESULT NO RESULT
RANDOM READ 7% 16.7 NO RESULT NO RESULT
BUFFERED READ 4% 19.9 100% 2,05
AVERAGE ACCESS 2% 21.7 3% 17,8
