So i just got a used Toshiba satellite l855d-s5114 with the a8 4500m apu, my plan was to upgrade to the a10 5750m but i am not sure if it will work, i have seen afew places say it will but some saying that the cpu is soldered on the board and its not possible, i have the urge to open this laptop up and see, but to save the hassle im asking here first.

My cpu socket type is FP2 (904)

RAM 4gb

Windows 8.1 64bit

Thank you for any help i get.

AMD's FP2 socket uses the BGA method of attaching the APU to the board so yeah, changing the APU to another won't be possible unless you have an advanced BGA rework station.

Don't bothering opening it as it will be a waste of time, the things that you can consider upgrading is the RAM, the maximum is 16GB (2 x 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 SODIMMs).

You can also upgrade the hard drive to a higher capacity one but performance won't really be affected a lot.

I actually ended up taking it apart, and the cpu actually came out! i looked at the socket closely and noticed that it was an FS1 socket, so i think this means i can upgrade to the a10 5750m!

Well, just make sure the APU is compatible with that laptop motherboard and make sure you clean the old thermal paste off the heatsink and reapply it with new thermal paste.

And double check whether the old socket was FS1r1 or r2 since r2 won't work with a r1 in any way if that makes sense.

Good luck with the install!

I just checked on core temp and it is reporting my socket as FS1r2!

So my next questions are,

1. Will i need a bios update? I cant seem to find one on the Toshiba website (for this model)

2. Is the A10 5750m the best cpu this socket can handle. (FS1r2)

3. This laptop currently has ddr3 1600mhz, should i upgrade to 1866 modules or just add another 4gb 1600. Or will further increasing to 12-16gb make a difference.

Thanks! I'm really excited about this so far.

1. The latest BIOS revision can be found here - http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=3574881 , you need to check which revison you currently have.

2. Not entirely sure on that, but if the A10 is FS1r2 then it should work fine and it is near the top if not the best.

3. RAM speed is currently fine, adding more modules would be better since you will be able to have more apps open but it isn't currently important.
