Hi. So I will be buying a laptop today and I wanted to ask you for some opinions. I will be using the laptop mostly as a coding laptop, with unity, visual studio and possibly some photoshop, alongside needing it for use at school (word, powerpoint etc) so a large batterylife is somewhat useful. I want to be with a good battery life and to hold on a lot of time before battery runs out. My Budget is £300, I would appreciate any help other than options I have provided. Screen quality is also important however 1366x768 is the only option with under £300(unless chormebooks)

1) Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E540
CPU Intel Core i3-4000M
RAM 4GB RAM
HDD 500GB Harddrive
GPU Intel HD Graphics 4600

2) Lenovo IdeaPad B50-70
CPU - Intel Core i3-4030U
GPU - Intel HD Graphics 4400
HDD - 500GB
RAM - 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz

3) Asus X555LA
CPU - Intel Core i3-4030U
GPU - Intel HD Graphics 4400
HDD - 1TB
RAM - 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz

Extra storage is nice but battrery life should take precedence.
Ive done some research and I believe I can add 4gb more RAM to each of these systems, I would appreciate if that knowledge could be validated.
Thanks!

Out of those 3, the E540 is the most powerful. I can't say for the two, but I know that the E540 can have another 4GB's of RAM in (I've sold a few to clients before). I'm pretty sure the B50 70 is upgradable (I have the older model, and that is.)

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the swift response, Do you have any information about battery life? I believe these are all similar in that aspect. Thanks for the info on the RAM Upgrades

Well the few that I've had in seemed to be great in our tests, with moderate use, we achieved 5 hours with fairly light use.

The Thinkpad Edge seems like the best model in terms of raw performance with its faster CPU, granted that's really not a big deal for what you want.

It claims a full day battery and if that's true, then that's obviously excellent.

Most student work does not take up a lot of hard drive space, so a 500GB hard drive is more than enough. All of my engineering work from the last two years of college takes up less than 5GB.

You should be able to add more RAM, but I make no guarantee on the difficulty of it. It shouldn't be difficult, just remove a screw or two to access the RAM slots, exchange them (there's usually a small pin you push to remove laptop memory), and pop the case piece back on thne turn the computer on to verify it worked. However, without having that model on hand, I can't be sure it's easy to open the case up.

For the record, upgrading storage- should you need to- should be easy too, although you'd need to clone the hard drive first.

#1 has best performance (best CPU and GPU) and battery should also be okay according to the shop "Its long-life battery lets you get a full day of work in on a single charge." although some shops specify the battery life with 6h. If that's enough, definitely take #1.

The others MIGHT have longer battery life since their CPU is weaker and more power-saving.

Is this for the edge?
