USB 2 HD connects to USB3 port question

I have a new Lenovo G500 i-3110 CPU, it came with 1 USB2 + 2 USB 3 ports, I'm using USB 2 port for my mouse and would like to use the USB 3 port for my USB 2 HD, I've read that USB 3 is backward compatible with USB 2, but what about the cable? I can still use the same USB 2 cable to connect to USB 3 port in my laptop or I have to purchase an adapter or new cable? I tried to insert the USB 2 cable and it won't fit in and I'm afraid to force it and damage the port.

Your cable will work with USB 3.0, there is no adapter needed. Make sure that you have the cable oriented correctly.
