use Asus recovery disks on new HDD?

I have an Asus U56E laptop. The hard drive is completely dead, so there is no access to the recovery partition. I created recovery / restore disks when I first purchased the computer. The question I have is, can the recovery disks be used to restore the system to a new hard drive? I tried once, but after reading from the 3rd and final disk, the process stopped with error 1029. Thanks.

This error 1029 seems to be well known on the net, but i couldn't find a solution to it. The general recommendation seems to be to download a win iso image and reinstall with your original product code.
