Valve really is the last developer I buy from based on brand name alone for my PC. Their games are fresh and polished, I think their sales and loyal customers reflect that a great deal. It is not uncommon for a Steam user to actually own their entire library. I wish the same could be said for bigger devs. Inconvenience Valve so PS3 fanboys can debate how their games look better at the cost of quality? Valve, you go ahead and decide which way is best to make your dollar. I know that every cent you make is efficiently being spent to create great games on my gaming platform of choice.

Market adoption was very slow because of this, not many people could afford such an expensive console out there with two other cheaper options out there. Most people did not/do not care about Blu-Ray, a majority are still content with DVD, so it still wasn't a big sell (but many that did bought it namely for this alone, not games). The development kit was horribly done in a manner that not many people wanted to fool with it. The must-have content was very much lacking and just wasn't reason alone to buy the thing (although they are getting better). The start of 2011 will be the 5th year that the console has been out, and so will the next-gens from other console makers. It will no longer look as shiny and flashy when you have hardware out (most notably the GPU) that will blow it our of the water because it is five years newer roughly. Compared to the success that the PS2 is, yes, the PS3 is a disappointment both to Sony and the fans.

Infinity Ward: "Developing on PS3 was easy." Criterion followed suit. Both are 3rd party developers.
Anyways, Valve makes great PC games and certainly have no obligation to make games on PS3. At the same time though, why is it that the PS3 has the more technically impressive exclusives? I haven't seen a game since the 1st gears that pushed any boundaries on the Xbox 360. Even that was pretty basic. It seems like its games are made just "good enough" and then marketed up and down to make a ton of money, whereas games like Uncharted 1 and 2, MGS 4, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, etc. are made with some more in mind, and it shows in the final product. Is it just a lack of developer talent/creativity or something more, like technical reasons?
And btw, still waiting for Episode 3.....

I can't believe the Sony fan boys and the people calling valve(of all companies)lazy. Yeah they release all that free DLC for all those games for your lazy asses to constantly complain about how it doesn't seem right or that you'll have to buy a sequel WAAAAAAAAAA!

I love all the PS3 fanbois saying valve is going to regret it and what not, regret what? PC is there biggest market easily. Orange box and left 4 dead each sold much more on PC then on any console. Then valve has Steam, something a lot of companies are looking at to release their games on and/or to copy.

I think some of you are missing the point that Valve is making, namely that they are more interested in investing their time to create compelling game experiences rather than waste a lot of time trying to get to grips with a system this is not particularly development friendly. I for one think this is an extremely good thing and it is Sony who should rethink their strategy. The Playstation 3 is unquestionably a powerful piece of hardware, but Sony have ruined it with their close-minded approach to development. They discourage hobbyists from creating anything on the console which I think is a very sad. Why cut people off when you could encourage them like Microsoft have done with the XNA system, if you want developers for the future, then why not offer something for them now that they can use at home like we all did in the eighties..?
I am a senior multimedia developer in the TV Broadcast industry, and have progressed from assembly language into C++ and now C++ combined with C# so I understand only too well the technical challenges associated with low level programming. However, over the last few years, Microsoft platforms have become extremely user friendly and allow for intelligent, fast development without sacrificing quality. This can only be a good thing since it allows developers to concentrate on the game experience itself. I have absolutely no interest in being bogged down trying to learn a completely user unfriendly system when there is a much better alternative out there. The whole point of writing a game is to provide an experience which is something Valve have clearly demonstrated a huge talent. I applaud their decision to reject the PS3. If more developers do this, then maybe Sony will consider rethink their development ethos.
