[citation][nom]jivdis1x[/nom]The manufacturer of the phone is not giving them out free. The carrier buys them. Sales is sales, doesn't matter who buys them. The saleman see dollars sign when iphone buyer comes into the store. "oh, I'll charge this smuck something that should be free!"[/citation]Maybe not free, but they could subsidize them more and sell them for $99 with contract if apple would let them. That's about what they are worth IMO; around the same as a mid-level Android phone like a Droid X2 or something.

[citation][nom]getreal[/nom]Consumers speak with their wallets, and more people are buying iPhones than any other phone. Face it, Android is a niche product for nerds and for poor people on carriers like Boost Mobile and Cricket who cannot afford a real "smartphone".[/citation]
You do realize you're on a hardware site full on enthusiasts? By saying the Android is for "nerds" your implying it's for users who prefer a phone with great specs and hardware and have knowledge of what's offered for the price. If you get sick of Android fans attacking Apple, then you may leave. No one is forcing you to read these articles, read the comments, or better yet, stay on this site.

Except the bill of materials (not including research and development or anything else) on the iPhone 4S is almost $200.

So your opinion is that products should be sold for $100 less than the cost of the components that comprise it, when the carriers are having no problem selling them at twice as much?

Why, it's, it's...BRILLIANT!

You should leave the business talk to grown ups, son, because you are obviously clueless. But hey, if I ever need advice on how to catch Pokemon, I'll holla at ya!

[citation][nom]weaselspleen[/nom]Jeez people, Getreal is trolling you hard. I bet he's posting from his Galaxy Tab right now, laughing his ass off.[/citation]I hope that's the case otherwise he is sorely lacking companionship in his life and is desperately seeking approval from somewhere.

Regarding the B.O.M. cost on devices as opposed to the selling price, see this.

All phones with contracts are subsidized and sold at a price that is less that cost, dummy.

I don't believe I asked any questions requiring a Pokemon specialist, so I'm not sure why you replied! You are out of your element here, but I will educate you anyway, son:

Your suggestion is that the telcos should further subsidize a phone they have no problems selling out of. Telcos. The same ones who think you should have individual data plans per household and separate ones for tethering. Now reevaluate your statement.

If anything, they should be raising the price, as people would still gladly pay it, and they would make even more money. It would be a rotten thing to do, but they could easily up the price on the iPhone $50, and it would still sell out just as fast.

I know it can be fun arguing with fools but at least argue about something important.

Do you what is worst than a company price gouging a product due to high demand. Is the consumer knowingly accept it. It's not all Apple's fault or the carrier fault to not subsidize the iphone. It's the people that continue to buy them.

Do NOT feed the trolls!...

To the article: I do not believe for a minute that such a great phone would exist only on one network, given the fact that is has multiple CDMA/GSM bands. As the op admits that the claim does not even exist on Verizon's site (or it has been removed), I really do not see the point of this article.

[citation][nom]JMcEntegart[/nom]I don't understand why the Nexus One and Nexus S were available at T-Mobile right off the bat but the Galaxy Nexus has moved the whole shebang to Verizon. My Nexus One is dying and I was holding off for the Galaxy Nexus. Now I don't know if I have the patience (my phone is driving me mental) to wait and see how long it will be before the Galaxy Nexus hits my network. I might have to hit up ebay for a cheap Nexus S...[/citation]
Maybe exclusively from Verizon on CDMA bands in US (no Sprint, Appalachian Wireless or other CDMA carriers yet), because it would make no sense to put that radio in it and then use only the CDMA. I bet it will be available on all GSM bands worldwide.

[citation][nom]getreal[/nom]And you should learn to read! I said that the iphone is selling more than "any other phone", not that iOS outsells Android. But Android "sales" aren't really sales when providers have to literally give them away to get people to use them. Add all the value carriers that Apple isn't on, and Android grabs more marketshare that Apple isn't competing in.Now that the iPhone is on most major, US carriers, it will likely cannibalize Android sales for people that only got Android because it was either that or a Blackberry.[/citation]
Except that you missed something. Even moving away from AT&T exclusivity hasn't helped iPhone compete with Android......the gap is STILL spreading....

I'm starting to think that the Gov't is giving away iPhones at the welfare office.....seems every saturday when I'm at the supermarket, I get stuck behind some lady using foodstamps while talking on her iPhone....

[citation][nom]captaincharisma[/nom]LOL all the iphone 4S did was catch up to the Nexus S. you apple fanboys always crack me up[/citation]

Well lets not be clueless here.

The iPhone 4S has the best CPU/GPU combination of any phone full stop. That is not 'catching up', that is well and truly leading the way. It also has far better battery, apps, customer satisfaction bla bla I really shouldn't have to tell you this - you must be completely uninformed. See if you can see far enough down this list to find the Nexus S:
http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph4951/41619.png

What's more, the less-than-2-year-old Nexus one wont even be receiving the ICS update. That is terrible terrible customer service.

You Apple haters crack me up because you seem to have no knowledge of what these phones can actually do or how they compare to each other. You start out with hate and try to believe the world is as you wish.

Did you even read his comment? He's saying that there are however-many Android manufacturers producing phones and being forced to sell them at very low prices to get them to sell. Now that combined effort of all of those manufacturers means that Android as an OS is selling more than iOS, but that iPhone 4S is selling more than any other phone. Android's success is not so impressive when you realise that all the profits (after Microsoft takes it's 55%) are split 20 or so ways. Apple makes more sales than any other individual phone and charges more for each, which is why they are so successful.

The market decides what something is worth. Not you. Given that iPhone 4S is slightly more expensive than the leading Android phones but still outsells them, the market agrees that they are worth more.
