Watch ripped movies from an external hard drive on my laptop

Just had to do a fresh install. I didn't do it. My geek friend did. I nor he thought of remebering all the programs i had installed.I have the program I used to rip dvds to my external hard drive. Now I can't think of the program I used to watch them.Any suggestions on a program that will allow me to watch the dvds, which are saved as a file on my external hard drive, on my laptop.

Videolan VLC plays a lot of stuff. Freeware.
