Watching movies from external HD on TV

Hello,
I would really like to put my DVDs on an external hard drive and be able to attach it to my Vizio TV, but it only has HDMI ports, is this possible? If so, what kind of external hard drive is best? I can put my dvds in to avi format, would I need a converter? I am sort of "techie" dumb ... any help would be great, but I may ask a lot of questions! Thank you!

You would need to connect your computer to the TV using an HDMI port on the video card (if it has one).

It might just be best to use a dvd player...this is really more trouble then its worth.
