Should wcescomm.exe be using 8 or 9% of CPU time when my PDA is in it's
craddle? Seems a bit much to me.

Yep, it uses 8% to 10% on my 1.7 GHz Pentium IV laptop (when Speedstep has
it at 1.2 GHz).

That's strange. Mine is sitting at 0% right now, and it's only when it's
actually sync'ing that it bumps up to 2 or 3%. I've been watching it while
typing this in, and it hasn't changed from the 0%. I've probably cursed
myself by typing this in, but there you go! :)

Mine is using 5-8% so I guess that it is normal even though it seems abit
much...

In the settings you can set it to sync only when you click sync, rather
than everytime a change is made. I have actually removed it from my
startup, I just open it when I want to use my PDA.

The following link points you to a little utility called "ActiveSync
Toggle" which will enable or disable Activesync when YOU want it. It has
the added advantage that when in a disabled state, the "wcescomm" process
is no longer present. The utility is freeware and so you use it at your
own risk.

it's not much on its own, but when all applications start doing it - it
really slows you down! Let me look, ActiveSync, Nokia Phone Browser,
Palm Desktop, iTunes, MSN... blah and 128mb of RAM :(

The usage will depend on your machine/processor but it typically uses
processor time. (mine is 3 to 4%)

There is a small utility that will switch Activesync off, you can restart it
when you want as normal.

KillSync:
http://www.cewindows.net/applications/killsync.htm

There's also resync that switches it off then restarts it if you have
connection issues. I find it does turn it off then reruns it, but still
can't connect until a reboot.

That is normal. Doesn't matter how fast your PC is. WHen docked, AS
will just go to 8% on some machines.
