Reading this article, is like I'm reading as boffin mag for retailers, not sure of your technical knowledge Rachael, though after reading this article it comes across as a complete idiot has written this article recycling the same junk that comes out sales rep's mouth..

After reading what others have said on this article, I would have to agree with them Tom's has gone down in the world, as a journo, you might have credentials up to wazoo, as someone with a bit tech knowledge you have a rather limited experience and best not open your mouth to much as you keep putting you're foot in it..

I'm not trying to belittle you so don't try to belittle us, you have the power to guide others to choose the right option to buy any given product, by dumbing down any article to entice other less technical readers to read your publication it only reflects bad on the site and makes the reviewer look like a complete ass, because they come across as an idiot that has written the article which what spills out their mouth is no more than boffin tech from the vendor and comes across like a moron has written it as they have none or limited technical experience in the field they're writing about..

Whether it's tom's guide or tom's hardware, you should strive to meet the quality of review that tom's has had in the past regardless of which site you write for, failure to do this anything you write in the future isn't going to be taken serious and makes you look like an idiot when you try to explain yourself then start arguing with the the avid fans because you don't like what they are telling you... before replying to what I've said try re-reading what you have stated in the the article then re-read what the posters to this article and take what they said as a constructive criticism, failure to do this only makes you look stupid...

Why would you not just use windows home server and fill it full of drives. I believe the ease of use and functionality would be superior and at least at announcement the price point is better.

I bought one of these for a same remote office can I add this into our AD no chance. Support advised me to either contact Microsoft or speak to my network admin which I am. The first two guys from western I spoke to didnt even know what Active Directory is. If anyone has managed to add one of these into their AD and manage users and group please let me know. I can add it in to my AD then what I can't get access to any ACL's ????

well, the sharespace is a green power technology where it reserve power when it is not in use. Meaning that it will less consume power and the drive will auto operate when it is in use.

Thanks for the review.

When you said "We use a record size of 64 MB in our tests", didn't you mean 64KB ?

I would also have liked to have seen some performance tests with multiple clients doing IO to the NAS array as that might give a good indication of the performance expected in a small office environment.

Performance of my Drobo 2.0 array has been pretty terrible so I hope some of your other reviews will show me the way to its replacement....

In case if anyone is still looking at WD Sharespace, here is my penny's worth of advice after trauma of failure in RAID 5 in Sharespace.

I must agree WD has well marketing products just like Sharespace. I have used it for two years and everything was great.. until one fine day when one of the HDD failed. That was the beginning of my nightmare.

Lesson Learnt:
1. Don't expect any after sales service from WD Support. The call centre merely recites scripts from their database.
2. Don't expect to find out what's wrong if you are non-technical. The "tech support" expect you to be technical coz I was asked to removed the harddisk and plug it into a desktop or harddisk adaptor to run Data Lifeguard Diagnostic provided by WD online.
3. Don't expect to replace the harddisk fast coz you will need to confirm it's not working before you obtain a RMA and proceed for an "exchange". It's not immediate though. Was lucky I got it within one day but was told it can be 2 weeks wait.
4. Don't expect that the harddisk will synchornise as expected when the new harddisk is inserted into the NAS.
5. Don't expect "tech support" to explain that it is not working coz they will request that you wait for 16 hours before concluding that the RAID is not synchonizing.
6. Don't expect that they offer any further assistance coz they will tell you that RAID failure could be possible. You will be advised to search the Internet for more information of how common RAID failure can occur.
7. Don't expect to pay a few hundred dollars coz you will be paying thousands of dollars though RAID can be rebuilt by expert.

Conclusion: You may be paying more than the price of WD Sharespace to recover your precious data when unforeseen circumstances happen.

For novice in Data Storage, WD sharespace is really not for mass storage and be trusted. You need to understand the risk before taking the plunge. Make sure you have at least another copy of backup somewhere else if you finally decided to buy.
