Was greeted by this message on the TV this morning with the TiVo box making
a continuous "clicking" sound.

Is it dead yet?

Hard drive is almost doubtlessly dead. You can get a replacement drive from
9thtee.com or weaknees.com. Or, you can get your own drive, larger if you
would like, and get an Instant Cake cd from ptvupgrade.com. This is a little
more technical, but not difficult if you have a little computer savvy.

Sounds like it... It sounds like the drive is dead. You can try to unplug
for a bit
and plug it back in to see if it does restart, but it sounds like the HDD is
toast.

Fear not though replacement drives are easy to make/buy and install.

My Directivo is starting to give me the "Welcome. Powering Up" message as of
late, it did it again this morning. No clicking sounds but I have to unplug
it to get it to boot back up. Anyone seen this before? I have this on a HDTV
and it isn't used but ever few days at least in terms of moving around in
the menu. Some things are setup to record. It may be a problem with the
service data download which was 2:49 am last night. The software version is
3.1.1e-01-2-351.

Thanks

If not a harddrive problem, perhaps a problem with "unclean" current or
an intermittent power supply? Use of a line current leveller and/or a
UPS (uninterruptible power supply) might be in order? Several years
ago,my public utility power district (PUD) was doing upgrades to their
supply grid, and this happened quite often.I am not saying this is your
problem, but you might want to check it.

This DTV is actually the second unit. The first unit is about 12 months
older and does not do what this one does. It is used much more than the
flakly unit. What are the odds of it being a hardrive problem?

Reply:
I don't know....what are the odds? It could be.Most likely is.I was just
offering up another possibility of a continual auto-reboot of a
receiver, because it happened to me.I stated that it was not necessarily
his problem. He also stated there were no clicking noises or sounds
TYPICAL of a failing harddrive. I do not know.
But,although it is RARE, an intermittent power supply problem whether
external (outlet) or internal (inside the TiVo box itself) COULD bring
about the problem described.I never stated with absolute certainty this
was his problem.Just a secondary possibility.

Hard drive failure is confirmed.....and only after 22 months of use. Is
this normal in these boxes?

It's difficult to define "normal" for hard drive failure. The best
analogy is with light bulbs; what is a "normal" light bulb lifetime, and
is it unusual for one to last half as long (or twice as long for that
matter)? Minimizing heat and vibration can extend HDD life, but it
won't guarantee anything.

I'd suggest just accepting that it happened, and moving on to figuring
out the best way to fix it. If it's under warranty that's easy. If
not, I'd suggest replacing the drive with one from weakknees or one you
purchase yourself w/ an image from ptvupgrade.com. The former is more
expensive but easier, the latter is cheaper and perhaps quicker (since
the drive can be purchased in a store and the image downloaded).
