My laptop works fine when connected to a projector for powerpoints etc. But when I tried to connect to the TV with an HDMI cable, the display on the TV screen did not match that on the laptop screen i.e. the TV showed a weird version of my desktop screen - icons along the bottom taskbar but but no program icons on the body of the screen, whereas the laptop was showing the programme I wanted to watch from catch-up TV. Any ideas where I've gone wrong?

Solution
Probably the TV was set to extend your desktop and not to duplicate.
You can drag and drop the programme to the TV, if you move the window of it to the right site of your laptops screen and move it over the border of the screen. The programme should appear on the TV then.

While your TV is connected, press the hotkey button windows + p.
A screen will appear:
press windows+ p more times to get to the duplicate options. After releasing the buttons, the screen should switch to the duplicated desktop view
