What is better in a laptop more ram or gb

Hello,
I'm a college student that is looking for a lap top that is light and affordable to do school work on as wll as dvd/cd, and flash drive ready. I dont want to worry about the speed to watch video's or memory space.this will be my school lap top becase the one I already have runs very slow its about 5 years old.
