hello!

I own a bose companion 5, which I have had for nearly 4 years now. When I first got it, it sounded amazing, and it still does. I haven't come across that many speakers but I still haven't found one that sound better than these yet. Up against the Harmon Kardon Soundstick 2, the Bose destroys it (in my opinion). But I keep hearing things about how Bose use cheap parts etc, and how you can find better speakers elsewhere? So I have come here because I am looking for a decent upgrade to my current speaker system. I hope you can help me find a great system that can destroy the bose companion 5. Yes, they may have cheap parts, but they sound great. Please help!

Thanks

What sounds "good" is very relevant to the person listening. I would never buy speakers without listening to them. I have found that reviews you read or going on what other people say about what sounds good can be quite disappointing. If you like the way they sound, that is all that is important.

Bose receives a lot of criticism, because while their products are generally sound OK (not great), they usually sell for way more than a competing manufacturer's comparable product. Yes they use cheap parts for the selling price.
They are designed to not be annoying but leave out a lot of detail.
You don't mention if you listen to music, video, or games most?
Self powered speakers from Kanto, Audio Engine, KEF and Paradigm should be considered. Don't let the lack of a separate subwoofer be a deal breaker as a larger main speaker will have a fuller sound that doesn't leave a gap between the satellite and sub (which the Bose and many other 2.1 systems have). You can add a real subwoofer later.
