What is the difference between a pentium i3 processor and a intel core duo

Hello, I am not a computer wizard obviously, so I was wondering if you might be able to help me out with this. We are purchasing our 16 yr old son a laptop for Christmas and I needed to know the difference between a pentium i3 processor and a intel core duo P7575 and which is preferred and why. Thnx!

The difference is well, a different processor. Need more info to see which laptop is the overall better laptop.

Well the basic difference is that i3 are the newer models, all of them are dual core.
the Core 2 duo are older like 2-3 years depends which you choose.

i3 have 2 versions last years that are marked with 3xxM and this years 2xxxM(most often 2310M)
A new i3(2xxxM) is better than any i3 from last year and much better than core 2 duo

Here is a rule of thumb:
i3-2xxxM @ 2.100 Mhz is more than i3-3xxM @ 2.400Mhz is more than Core 2 duo @ 2.800 Mhz.

Also give the entire chart with considered models and why you need it. Because computers are more than just processor.

Depends on the budget and the scarce data i give you this recomendation:
Get i3/i5 2xxxM
6-8GB Ram
500 HDD(or more)
GPU*ATI 6470(or higher, 6570 is better,5650 is better,4870 is better) or NVIDIA 525M(or 540M/555M)*
Screen 15.6" Led
This is approximatelly 600USD laptop (may differ but will stay in the +-100)


*If you dont want him to play games on the pc dont get any of theese instead go for HD3000* But be warned he may a bit upset if you do that.

The Core Duo predates the Core 2 Duo. It is slightly older in design. The Core i3 (Sandy Bridge) is basically two generations newer than the Core Duo CPU. Performance wise the Core i3 probably provides around 30% more performance if you were to it to a Core Duo with the same clock speed.
