Internet security software often comes with its own firewall unlike basic antivirus.Does such a firewall actually protect better from hacker attacks than windows firewall? Does software firewall is even necessary when router already offers hardware firewall with strong protection and if you are the only person connected to the network?

Pretty much not needed.
I've run a separate PC with a border firewall device. ipCop, pfSense, untangle.
Mostly, it was just for playing around and investigation.

Assuming the squishy bit between your ears is mostly functioning, not needed.
