So, I just started posting here and I know this community has lots of good and knowledgeable people (Every time I Google something about PCs Tom's Hardware pop up) so maybe you'll be able to help me.

I always loved music, sound effects, soundtracks etc but I've never had good headphones to enjoy the most of it. Right now I'm using my Turtle Beach X12 since those are the ones I used to play with when I had an Xbox 360. Now that I play in PC and I watch things like Linus Tech Tips and other smart people, I realized that my headphones (headset) is not as top of the line as I thought.

So I've decided it is time to upgrade but that only would be if I need to. I don't really know how the sound on a PC works, I don't know if it's limited by the motherboard, software or the headphones themselves. I thought, maybe I just should buy the most expensive ones but if my MOBO can be a bottleneck in quality then I'd be just wasting my money. Also, some of the most expensive headphones out there have features that are only useful for people who works on sound editing or in the media. I just want the best audio-experience possible when I'm watching a movie on my PC or when I'm playing a game with marvelous soundtracks.

Also, don't know if this has anything to do but I'm partially deaf on my right side due some close-to-death experiences in the past. So I hear better with one ear than with the other, so that also is one more problem between me and my perfect sound experience.

Can you guys help me find the best headphones for the buck but that will indeed make a difference without overkilling it?

what is your budget?

generally headphones in the $100-200 range are the sweet spot for performance for the dollar. what particular headphones are best for you depends on what kind of sound you like such as if you want a bassy sound or if you like limited bass input. whether you like open, airy sounding headphones or ones which have high sound isolation. whether you like more mids/highs type music or lows/mids.

if you only have onboard sound you may benefit from using a soundcard or external amp/dac. what option you want depends on your budget and if you need things like virtual surround or not.

Thank you for the answer. I realized that this wasn't a simple question as I thought it was. I am looking for something between $100-150 but right now my "priorities" changed so even if I find the right headphones for me I still couldn't buy them. :/
