Most HDMI outputs on computers are video only (there are some that carry audio but not many)

Just connect the audio out of the laptop to an audio in on the TV, My LG TV has a dedicated audio in for PC connections (Dsub VGA or HDMI)

Hope this helps

Make sure your graphics card is updated. That was my problem, I learned that the sound driver in the laptop has nothing to do with it the HDMI output is controlled by the graphics card.

^^^ Yes since only the graphics card can output data through HDMI the graphics driver must be updated.

This may have been true once, but not currently. Microsoft seems to have some bugs in HDMI audio in WIndows 8.1 and maybe also Windows 10. See the Web for using the Sound Output dialog box to select the HDMI-connected device as the Defaut Output Device, which sometimes works.
