HI guys,

I'm trying to decide between these two laptops:

Asus 555LF i3 5010 2.1 / 4 GB RAM / Nvidia geforce 930M / 15.6 in 1366x768 / 1 TB HDD 5400rpm / Win 10 Home

Asus 540 LJ i3 5001U 2.0 / 4 GB RAM / Nvidia geForce 920M / 15.6 in 1920x1088 / 1 TB HDD 5400rpm / DOS

The main differences I see are:

1) Processor (2.1 vs 2.0)
2) GPU (930M vs 920M)
3) Screen resolution (HD vs FHD)
4) OS (Win 10 home vs DOS)

What are the trade offs? I am guessing the processor and GPU are not going to make much difference in performance? I am loking to use the laptop for everyday use as well as some casual gaming such as TWR2, Assasins creed, Heroes & Generals etc.

The screen resolution seems significant as I have an Asus HD (1366x768) presently and the screen feels a bit dull. I'm having to constantly tweak the contrast, brightness etc. I guess I will have fork out a little for a Win product key but I'm ok with that. Will the GPU/screen res tradeoff make a big difference?

Thank you!

So the first one will def be better. Im assuming since its the screens native resolution it will look fine. and a better card running on a lower resolution will for sure be better than a worse card running a higher res. and if you lower the res on a native 1080p screeen that might not look great.

But honestly both choices are very underwhelming. If i had to deal with a 5400 rpm drive all the time i would kill myself. You cant find anything for 500 with a 960m and a atleast a 7200 rpm drive? with the 1000 out the 900 are getting dirt cheap. let me see

ok just looked prices arent great right now but this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834315907 still looks alot better then what your currently looking at. If you...

The first one is better in every way but the screen. That would be my choice if I HAD to choose between the two unless the second one was cheaper and also came with windows.

When you say it is better in every way but the screen what does that mean? Will a slightly more powerful GPU affect the look on a standard HD screen vs a Full naturally HD screen?

Gaming would be much better on the first with with the stronger video card and lesser screen. If this is not for gaming, there would be no noticeable performance difference between the two and I would get the cheaper one.

Thank you. I kind of agree. Does the graphic card affect the quality of an inferior screen as in this case? I will be using it for working more than games so, the quality of the screen is important but I don't want to spend all this money only to not have it run the one or two games decently enough if you know what i mean? The current Asus E402SA 1366x768 has a very weak display and poor viewing angles that makes it hard to read after a point (It dsnt have a GPU). So, I'm wondering if a GPU could make a 1366x768 'tolerable'? Any views are appreciated. Tks.

anyways good luck
