Well, what carrier/service provider was the phone you are putting the SIM card in from? That will make all the difference as there are GSM phones and there are CDMA phones. You can't use GSM on a CDMA network and vice versa. If the phone you are trying to put the SIM in is a GSM phone, it won't work (Verizon uses CDMA).

Here are links to the lists of CDMA and GSM carriers/service providers in the USA. If it turns out they are both the same (CDMA) then you will have to contact Verizon about the problem with the SIM.
