Why does my mac laptop show numbers when i type letters

Hello,
my mac book now types random numbers, when i type letters on my keyboard. How can I get it back to normal? Is this problem just the computer, or a virus or hacker? mac is about 4 years old. I'm on a friends pc now. Any advice welcome.. thanks xx Helen
