Why doesn't my touchpad work when I'm signed into my computer, even though it works before signing in?

My touchpad works fine as long as I'm not signed in on my laptop. As soon as I sign in, though, it stops working. This started ever since I ran chkdsk.

My operating system is Windows 8.1. This is most definitely a software issue, not a hardware issue.

Try the following and see if it fixes it...

1. Go into "Control Panel".
2. Click "Hardware and Sound".
3. Now click "Mouse and Touchpad".
4. Now go to "Additional mouse options".
5. The Mouse Properties window will open. In here click on your device.
6. Make sure your device is set to enabled. If it isn't then click "Enable Device".
7. Exit both that screen and "Control Panel".

Also, you might want to check for updates to your drivers, including the Synaptics drivers.

If this does not help, and an external mouse works fine, then it may well be a hardware issue.

I know for a fact that it's not a hardware issue. I'll provide more details.

So I've been using the function where the touchpad is disabled when a mouse is plugged in. This used to work fine, though now, it always seems to sense that there's a mouse plugged in, whether or not there actually is one. The USB ports are fine. I also updated my drivers after this issue started happening to no avail. Keep in mind, when I disable this function, the touchpad works fine. There's nothing wrong with the touchpad. What I am thinking is that this might be an error in the registry, but I have no idea where I can look to fix it. I also would rather not disable the aforementioned function, as it gets in the way when I'm tying and such.

I see. I must have read over that (not seen). If none of that is working, and I agree it is less likely that it is the hardware due to it working prior to logging in, then I am wondering if other driver issues are involved. Perhaps a conflict. While you could be right about the registry, it may also be the drivers involving the USB port where you connect your mouse. I would check that as well. If not that, then a registry search may be warranted, however I would be really careful about what you change or remove in there. Really Careful.
