Why is my GPU overheating?

I have a Gateway ID49CO1H with a Nvidia Geforce GT 320M. My laptop has been shutting off by itself after a few minutes of gaming so I suspected it was a overheating problem. The CPU temps were fine (around 60-70 degrees) but the GPU temp was around 85 degrees +. I suspected that the GPU was the problem so I replaced the thermal pasting for the GPU and CPU (might as well) with arctic silver 5. When I loaded up the game again, it lasted a lil longer but eventually crashed again. If it's not the thermal paste, what can be the reason for it to overheat?

It could very well be that the fan is failing and is in need of replacement. I'm assuming you cleaned the heatsink when you replaced the thermal compound. Also what surface is the laptop used on - for gaming I suggest the use of a cooling pad but at a minimum the laptop should be on a flat, hard surface.

Thank you, I forgot to clean the heatsink. Problem solved now :)
