Why Unlock Extra Cores? I have Phenom X2 555

Does it increase the FPS for games or what?

If i am able to unlock phenom X2 555 to 4 cores, how fast is that? is that a X4 965? What is it equivalent to? Any benchmark? Thanks, I am so confused.

The more cores the better specially if you can get them for free.
