[citation][nom]juliom[/nom]They don't spin the opposite direction, but they are read from the outside to the inside. Same as Gamecube discs.[/citation]

And where does the disc's get dmg'd/smudged the most? Clever move indeed =/

@Belardo, the Japanese Wii and Wii U do not have DVD/BR playback. Back in 2007, Nintendo discussed the idea of releasing a DVD movie playing Wii model in Japan but never released it.

@CyberAngel, DirectX is irrelevant on home consoles (except for Xbox and X360 because MS makes both the console and the DirectX API). PS3 doesn't use DirectX either. In fact, it's a bulky, bloated, API that has high overhead and doesn't really do anything for a console that can't be down in shader language anyway.

so i'm going to replace my ps3, which also doubles as my blu-ray player, with a wii u that does't play blu-rays. how am i going to play all of my blu-rays now? i think it's kind of stupid for nintendo to automatically kill any chance of having ps3 owners upgrade to the new system.

I expect a Blu-ray channel to be offered. You pay the licensing fee required for the rights to use Blu-ray playback. That way anyone that wants to use it as a Blu-ray player can and they'll pay the rights for it while everyone else that doesn't need it isn't paying for it.

How about you use your freaking ps3 to keep watching bluray you freaking genius.

I agree with Nintendo on this one. Leave the crap out that is gonna make it cost more special features like this since I already have plenty of devices that are capable of doing the same thing.

Also you can mod the wii to play dvd's.. So I wonder if you'll be able to eventually mod the wii-u to play blu-rays..

I won't be bothering with Nintendo's latest console, not because of movie playback issues hut because a lack of direction. Those controllers are going to be expensive ANC costly to replace if this system is aimed at young kids.

As for propriety hardware for playback, Sega did that with the Dreamcast and now Sega is nothing more than a half-rate publisher.

I'll wait for the xbox 720

[citation][nom]nukem950[/nom]I figure it is licensing fees. I think they should have an app that has the fees in it. So if someone wants it, then they pay for it. Those who do not care do not have to pay for it.[/citation]
yea... but regardless nintendo would have to foot the bill for the fee, with or without players paying for it.
[citation][nom]jamesedgeuk2000[/nom]I think this is the right idea, nobody whined that the SNES/N64 couldn't play VHS, now just fix the stupid controller[/citation]
your point is stupid.
if snes or n64 ran off vhs tapes, as in thats what games were loaded from, you can bet your ass i would want vhs playback. but i can understand the licencing things. [citation][nom]belardo[/nom]The Japanese versions of the Wii and WII-U play back DVD / BR.Stupid, so stupid.... they are targeting this to kids, so for some of us with kids... it means one less device to make clutter under the TV.[/citation]
SPECIAL EDITIONS if i remember correctly. and they cost quite a bit more too, the game cube that could play dvds cost i think 1-200 more than the standard one.
[citation][nom]N19h7M4r3[/nom]Its easy to figure out why they did it. If its proprietary I can bet you no one will have a burner at home that can make disk's for it.[/citation]
no, its about licencing rights. they would owe sony 1$ per disc about sold, and money on the console.

piracy is a far lesser concern to them than this.
[citation][nom]juliom[/nom]So many kids commenting these days... You do realize that the R700 has a tesselator? Hell, even the Xbox 360 has a telesselator! And you realize that just because it's R700 BASED doesn't mean that it will be outdated? And you do realize that the chip will be tweaked and enhanced? (example: it's going to be manufactured at 32nm instead of the original 55nm) And you do realize that an "old" and "outdated" 4870 GPU is around 4 times more powerfull than the 7800 based GPU on the PS3? And you do realize that the current AMD flagship card is based on the R700 architecture?[/citation]

THANK YOU, you make my points for me, its based on an older architecture, but just because its on the console, you will see game play on it that you never would have thought possible while it was still pc only hardware. i @#$@ing LOVE the stagnation of hardware because it forces devs to optimize code instead of brute force crap
[citation][nom]nebun[/nom]the excuse is so lame...how hard is it to implement Blu-ray/DVD-playback???? this really boggles my mind!!!!!!![/citation]
not hard, but they have to give money to sony for every disc if they did.[citation][nom]vistaofdoom[/nom]People that think in DX iterations while talking about consoles should be shot.[/citation]

its like we share the same mind.

sega also had 7 consoles minimum going world wide, and had some massive failures consecutively to boot.

@AndrewMD did you now before sega died out it was one of the best systems on the market and was beating nintendo toe to toe and then the owner decided well even though the sega dream cast is epic as shit and has good graphics compared to everything out there lets kill it off and become a third part crap game maker......

the nintendo wii u is going to be good and people should know the r700 that is in it will beat the ps3 and xbox 360 in any game who cares for media playback i got enough shit to that with plus my ps3 so yeah nintedo still has the best first party games out and i think the only first party games made since anything on xbox goes to the pc and the ps3 lost most of its exclusive titles like final fantasy and what not to xbox so yeah be happy zelda isnt on the ps3 or xbox yet.......

The original Wii DOES have DVD Playback capabilities, it's just not enabled. You can hack it to play DVDs, I've watched DVDs on a Wii many times.

Redzonebob, Sega has never beaten Nintendo in a hardware generation.
Genesis - 40 million || SNES - 49 million
Saturn - 9.5 million || N64 - 33 million
Dreamcast - 10.6 million || GC - 21.7 million

And Sega went 3rd party because they were losing a lot of money. It was either go 3rd party or file for bankruptcy.

Not even DVD huh?
This is what I was talking about Nintendo not getting what people really want and why they should quit making consoles and just make games. I don't like having to buy nintendo consoles just for Zelda, Mario and the rest of the gang...

Nintendo already did it with the Wii, and they sold almost as many as the MS and Sony combined.

It was the best system graphically (at the time) but it never sold more consoles or more games than nintendo.

And they didn't just throw in the towel. The console was hacked and pirates found out, by simply adding a certain boot sector to a DVD it would play the game WITHOUT a mod chip or any disk swapping so piracy was easy and too many people started doing it. Millions of games we pirated because nobody even needed a modchip. Game developers said F*** that console, everyone will just pirate our games and they stopped making games for it. With no new games coming out Sega decided to put an end to the system and their console efforts. Because lets be honest... I don't know of any console that made it SOOOO easy to pirate games. Even the PS1 needed a mod chip.

[citation][nom]TheViper[/nom]Dark Lord, you don't own a DVD player. $25 bucks at Wal-mart.[/citation]
lol...
yes, I have a DVD player cause I have a PS3 which also plays Blurays. But if they really want to dominate they should include things like that. If I was to have only 1 gaming console hooked up I would want it to play DVD's (at least) and work more like a media center with stuff like netflix, hulu and whatever else. Personally I think the PS3 does everything a console should do.. And the XBox360 does a good job too... but nintendo.. they always limit the possibilities. Their mindeset: Games only, nothing else matters...

My wife and I use my PS3 to watch Blurays, DVDs, Netflix and rent movies all the time
