Solved! Will a male to male USB cable work to transfer files from a dead laptop to a working pc?

My laptop broke during an upgrade and keeps searching for a previous version of Windows, eternally on loop. I don't want to lose the files on the laptop by reinstalling windows and doing a full reset just yet, so was wondering what the cheapest and most effective way to get the files would be? If I bought a USB male to male cable and plugged my dead laptop and a working laptop together, would the dead laptop be picked up as a drive without having power or an operating system, enabling me to transfer the files as though the dead laptop was a USB drive? Is there a particular USB male to male cable that I need to buy? Any other ideas would be welcome, thank you!

Its easier if you give us model of laptop and we will post YouTube link for dissasembly tutorial and you can connect HDD to your PC or if you have laptop you can buy this to convert sata to usb 3.0
