My Alienware 14, the 2015 model No. P39G001 is stuck in what i would call a disc repair loop. Two days ago i updated AVG that required me to restart, when the restart finished i windows loaded up extremely slowly and once i was logged in i received an error that some files on my C: drive had ben damaged/corrupted. when i finally got the computer to the recovery settings menu, it told me that the error had to be repaired before i could start the recovery and that it would have to be don during a restart. i allowed the computer to restart and begin the repair and it has been scanning and "repairing" files for over 24 hours with the only changes being that it occasionally changes between a screen saying that it is a %of the way done scanning and repairing(only saw it get up to 30%) then changes to it saying that it is repairing and may take over an hour. I've tried forcibly turning off the laptop but when it starts back up it restarts the whole process.

AVG seems good at messing up pc's

what does recovery do? run a reset? it seems you have a corrupted image and running a reset using that won't get you very far. I suggest you fresh install and start again (backing up anything you can save first - see link below)

What I suggest is this, follow this page to copy any files you want off laptop: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/
download the windows 10 media creation tool and make a bootable Win 10 Installer on USB or DVD
change boot order so DVD or USB are first, boot drive second
boot from installer and follow this: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

what do you suggest fro a free anti-Virus,malware, spyware ect.

The recovery i was trying to run was to restore the system to a set restore point without messing with any of my files. but the system couldn't do that due to the error.

The issue with stopping the repair where it is, is that i can't the moment i turn it on it resumes the scan and repair and i don't know how to get around that.

System restore may not work in win 10, its not on by default and is a dumbed down version to what was in 7.

you need to make a win 10 install USB, change the bios boot order to recognise USB first before hdd, and then we can try to use it to repair the install before we have to fresh install. I don't know if the repair options will work, we should try a reset first before a full install but will need install disc to use as a boot disc

I use Bitdefender but I hear Comodo is good too.

i always forget the obvious..., make the installer on another computer, its obvious you cannot use the broken one. I realise you may not have one handy but you must know someone with one. Sorry, I should have mentioned that above.

if only there were another way to break the cycle.
