Windows 8.1 says "no battery detected."

My Sony VGN-NR160E says "no battery detected" in Windows 8.1. It didn't work when I had Vista installed either. It stopped working about 6 months ago. How can I test if it's a hardware or software issue? I updated the BIOS and hard reset the battery with no luck.

Hi, if you go to the Device Manager, under Batteries what do you have ? Does the laptop charges the battery ?

device manager doesn't show a battery. there is a driver for it though. the laptop doesn't charge the battery and it says "not detected."
