Windows Vista. On Gateway P6312-Password not working

I have a Gateway P6312 which has been very faithful. Now I cannot get past the password access my Windows Vista, I forgot the password. My screen went blank after a large crackling thunder & lightning sequence during a major storm. I live on the top floor in an apt. My laptop was on a serge-protector. The word I had use prior to this just would not work anymore. Windows Bootable CD with the boot menu I have & went through the steps did not work. I am at a loss. I am trying not to loose any files by using Gateway Recovery. I just need to find a Windows Bootable to find out what my mistake was. HELP!! I live in Dallas TX
