My question is probably pretty simply to anyone familiar with media centers or raspberry pi.

Basically, my fiance's parents have a smart TV in their living room, and they love watching movies. However, they aren't the most tech savvy people on planet Earth, and I would like to set up an external HDD and a Raspberry Pi and throw some movies on it for them.

What would be the easiest way to set it up so they could stream movies to the TV while keeping it simple enough for normal people to use?

Thanks in advance!

Are you going to use XBMC or Plex? I had PI +b before.. it works but it really slow. All i can say is.. make sure you plug it directly to your router. I don't recommend wireless..

it will work on wireless but it will be really slow and have issues with buffering. XBMC is now called Kodi. its a streaming media player. you can do so much but its a lot of configurations.

Sounds good. How do I set it up in a way that they can easily browse my movie archive?
