An unlocked x800 gto2 will beat a x800 pro. But if you really want the video-in you should pick the x800 pro vivo.

The last X800GTO2 cards were both Dual DVI/VIVO, and already 16 pipeline-unlocked. Right out of the box. That's offset by a general inability to clock as high as the first batch (Oct/Nov 05). Ergo no BIOS mods required.

They were simply called X800GTO 16 and weren't made by Sapphire.
You can find them on NewEgg.

I'd assume they too are using R480.

No, they're called X800GTO2. Made by Sapphire. Like the one I have sitting here. Version 2 has 16 pipes, dual DVI and VIVO-- though it's not mentioned in any spec sheets.

Nope, that's true. Both ATITool and Futuremark (in the resultbrowser) mistakenly detect the GTO2 as an XL, presumably due to similar stock clockspeed and 16 pipelines.

@wusy: yeah, Anand reviewed them recently. The PowerColor part seemed to be showing itself as an R430.

Anyway, the original point was: there's no need to "unlock". Just add cooling and ramp up clockspeed.

The Sapphire GTO2 has the same core as the x850. And can be unlocked to the same specs and the x850xt and some can clock to x850xt PE specs.

The r430 and r480 both can have up to 16 pixel pipelines. The r480 is the core of X850 model cards, and the r430 is the core of X800 model cards, including the 16 pipeline XL cards.

ATITool and Futuremark probably detect the GTO2 with the r430 core as an XL because they are both based on said core. It detects my Sapphire GTO2 as an ATI Radeon X8 pro, with the r480 core and unlocked BIOS (if it reads any information from the BIOS).

Yes, the cards that read in atitool as R430's if you took the heatsink off were really R480's they just had an R430 bios loaded on them and therefore had the 16pipelines already unlocked.

The GTO2 LE (Limited Edition) cards, i've heard bad stories about those not overclocking really at all, like 450MHz max oc on the core. I beleive these are the ones that come on the blue pcb and do not have the extra power plug in the upper right corner of the card. Stay away from these if you plan on overclocking them.

i used atitool to determine if all 16 pipes were enabled on the sapphire x800gto2, and it reported 16 pipes, so there was no need to flash it from 12 to 16. but then i noticed that atitool was reporting an r430 core?
and so did rivatuner?

my initial reaction was shock, denial, anger and then grudging acceptance. before i bought it i made sure the product met my criteria:

1. mfr/sku - 21067-01-21 (this indicates that it has the r480 core)
2. red pcb with supplemental PEG power (this also indicates that it has the r480 core)

so when i recieved my gpu i was delighted the mfr/sku no. was correct it was a red pcb with PEG as advertised.

however the misleading info from atitool prompted me to open up the gpu to take a look under the hood and to my relief i saw the r480 core.

since atitool reported the wrong core perhaps it was also reporting the wrong number of pipes? - while it was easy to find out what the real core was is there a way i can determine if it really is 16 pipes or not?

can framerates determine if it is 12 or 16, are there any comparative reviews of framerates at 12 and at 16 on this card?

also the card could only manage a 520/540 (x850xt standard) overclock, anything above that the card would lock up - so i couldnt achieve the x850xt PE standard that others were bragging about.

but on upside i paid only £109 for a card thats selling for a £140-£175 under the designation of x850xt!

due to it being an x800, with 16 pipes, the tool sees it as a x800xl, which has the r430 core, that is the response you always get with one of those gto2's.
