Y splitter no sound

I have an Insignia NS-48D510NA17 (bought 2016) TV with and audio of headphone jack/audio out and an Kenwood stackable stereo system from the 1990's. I used the y splitter cable into the stereo audio in, and all I get is "feedback". No sound. I've tried ever variable combination and bought another cable in case the other was bad. Same feedback sound. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

First, plug in headphones or earbuds and make sure the headphone jack actually works.
A possibility is that you are over-driving your amp. Headphone jacks do not run at lineout voltage levels. Begin with the tv volume all the way down and slowly turn it up until you hear something from the amps speakers
