Y580 Whitelist

Does anyone out there have any information about the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580's bios white-list? I'm having a hard time finding any information. It seems as though they are incapable of receiving cards capable of 5 GHz communication. This would be a real bummer, if true. I'm pretty sure the antenna configuration is capable, as I have an Intel Advanced-N 6230 in an Eee netbook with only two leads. Works great on 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz (not simultaneously). The stock card is an "Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200BGN." This is good for single band 2.4 GHz, up to 300 Mbps.

Anyway, on a different note, its too bad Lenovo doesn't offer the Y480 14" with a 1080 display. That would have been ideal for my use.

On this page http/shop.lenovo.com/products/us/tech-specs/laptop/ideapad/y-series/y580/ that lists the specs it says it has Integrated 802.11 bg/bgn WiFi. If it was able to support 5 Ghz communication it would say 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi. So the answer is no, it does not support 5 Ghz communication. I looked up the customizations and there is no alternate wireless network card offered.

I modify my laptops right out of the box, and would like to see an Intel Centrino 6235 in one of these Y580s (5GHz to work with my network, and Bluetooth). Problem is, I'm pretty sure Lenovo has a hardware white-list that makes the bios refuse to continue when unknown hardware I.D.s are present (I'm sure its not as bad as HP's InsydeH20 bios, what a turd). Modifying the bios is not an option I am willing to take.

Just wondering if anyone has any info pertaining to the cards listed on the whitelist, if it exists at all.

it is true,
only special designed lenovo cards work.

that being said, I don't think the cards are that expensive.
you can just look on ebay and type in lenovo and the card you are interested in and something will come up.

For my Asus lappy which installed and works like a champ. Now for the Lenovo lappy, installed the part well and here comes the best part after turning on the machine "unauthorized wireless network card is plugged in". Guessing Lenovo has gotten smarter. I've done research and there different solutions, the BIOS mod, if this was my lappy I would have done it, modifying the PCIID slot and the spare slot. I'll try contacting the seller and see what happens. If I need to mod the ID then I'll simply return what I have and just get the regular one and go from there. Best of luck to those who get this working.

Nah haven't bothered. It's my brother's laptop and I don't want to mess it up, he's going to have to live without the 5GHz frequency .

I normally don't practice Necromancy, but maybe reviving this thread will be useful for people looking for information on how to replace their WiFi card in Lenovo's Y580. So here goes:

1. Find out your Y580's BIOS version
1.1. INFO: According to notebook database www.nbdb.de and the official Lenovo Forum Windows 7 / FreeDOS version differs from Y580 w/ Windows 8 BIOS version, so make you sure get the correct one

2. Get the correct BIOS file from here >> http/forum.techinferno.com/lenovo-ibm/2260-lenovo-y580-y480-unlocked-bios-versions-27.html

3. Flash the hacked BIOS w/o whitelist

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone else was having trouble with the TechInferno resources mentioned above? I tried to get the files by following TI forum rules, but apparently, I can't post until have posted 5 times (?!). I even tried to buy a membership; it said "none were available". (I have contacted TechInferno about this, but it doesn't seem like they care..)

So, does anyone have an alternative source to get this (or another) modified BIOS, or perhaps, a TI user can re-post the files over here?
