2.4ghz to 5ghz wifi converter

So I got an nvidia shield recently, and I know i need a 5ghz connection to stream games from my PC when away. The thing is not many hotspots give out a 5ghz connection (usually 2.4ghz) so my question is, Is there something I can carry with me to convert those 2.4ghz signals into dual band 5ghz. I been looking at wifi extenders, but it doesn't say anywhere if its doable. I found this but I don't know if it meets my needs.

I want something portable that i can take with me. For example to my parents house where they have a 2.4ghz modem

No you cant change it to something the hotspot may not have / or doesnt have

You could connect a WIFI access point via an ethernet cable to the main router. That would be the best option for situations like your parents house.
