you can have them install the software ahead of time with a DVD, then when you get there you connect their machines to your computer which hosts the license to run the software. Other option is to bring your own laptops for every student

It's not that easy the installation/configuration is about 30 mins and we can't afford that

It's going to take roughly the same amount of time (30min or so) no matter how much RAM you have.
The slow part of the installation process is taking place on the client side, not the server side.
-> Having 64GB of RAM is not going to make the client machines run faster.

you misunderstand, he wants to have 64gb ram so he can set up VM clients for students so it all runs from that one machine that has 64gb ram. Point is I don't think it's doable from the CPU/HDD end, but then I'm not an expert on virtualization.

Nothing to do with the topic about a laptop, but I just got one of those Dell 7500 workstations to setup for our 911 call room in the hospital yesterday. Has 6 RAM slots on the motherboard, and another 6 on a riser card, SAS controller on the motherboard with 4 SAS ports. It was under 8k though, but was not stuffed with RAM, they only have 4 because we run 32bit OS. Think it was between 4-5k.

2^64 bytes possible, theoretically... so we will be seeing higher and higher amounts of ram as prices go down and things get smaller... VMs takes up a lot of ram; In my field of network engineering where we virtualize routers/switches firewalls as a matter of course for training and testing.

16GB SODIMMs are now available: https://squareup.com/market/MemphisElectronicRetail/imm-g-d-lsod-ag-b-e-1

They're compatible with 5th-gen Intels. So any new laptop with 4 memory slots can have up to 64GB of RAM now!!!! And at only $325 per, that's not *too* bad. I was convinced that they would come out at $1000 or more, so this is a great day.

(I do a lot of virtualization, so I've been on the lookout for this for a long time)

This is great news! Do you have any recommendations on 5th gen Intel based laptops that can support 64gb of ram?

The ONLY one I've found so far is the MSI GT-80 Titan (http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/MSI-GT80-Titan-SLI-263-Gaming-Laptop). A slightly less expensive version is available on NewEgg here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152809&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Gaming+Laptops-_-N82E16834152809&gclid=Cj0KEQjw2v2sBRCazKGu3tSFz64BEiQAKIE1hnQkoLPwCL1Umf9fOLkRh520GP1pXP8YM1JQjjuHqQ8aAp6g8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds . That's the only one. Dell, IBM and HP haven't updated their mobile workstations with the Broadwell architecture (or if they have, they've removed two SODIMM slots - I'm looking at you and your stupid W550s, IBM). I'm certain there will be more available at some point this year, so I would wait unless you really feel like carrying around that 10lb beast.

I use my laptop every day for heavy usage tasks...If only there is a portable powerful pc that I can put in backpack everyday and go to work I will buy it...but unfortunately the only option right now is a laptop.
I deal with SQL processing, microsoft access data processing and other mapping tools that use a lot of RAM, for now I have 16gig of ram for my laptop wit 1TB of Samsung 850 PRO SSD upgrading to SSD gave my laptop's 5 times improvement on overall performance...

But knowing it can improve a lot more using PCI SSD and a bigger RAM makes me drool...lol
I wonder how much time I can save using this latest specs below.

This is my dream laptop as of September 2015

for this particular config of mine cost around 3,000 USD
What amazing is that if you build this in a desktop PC with identical specs above.. it will cost you around 4 to 5K USD.

I'm still saving for it ..hopefully I can buy it next year ...

Here are the other options for Laptop's that support's 64 Gb ram.
You can configure it the way you want to, depending on your needs
