800 dollar budget

Going back to school and I gave my self a budget of 800 bucks.

Requirments
17.3 screen( would do a 15.6 with a 3rd gen i7)
dedicated video card (or maybe "discrete" one to)

mainly school work but also some gaming on the side when I get bored and to lazy to go to the desktop lol

so any help is appreciated. Ive been goggling and searching for a week and I feel like I am missing ALOT out there.

not to be too picky but the first and last don't fit the requirements . I've looked at the Lenovo but anyone have any experience with that brand? Some of the reviews arent to good on quality. Also whats everyone's opinions on the AMD A8 and A10 series?

the A8 and A10 are decent APUs, but, even with me biased towards AMD, I would still have to recommend an intel CPU and discrete graphics card, since it will fit into your budget. AMD APUs are better for the those looking for casual gaming in the budget range where discrete graphics card can't afford to be fit, or in sleekbooks.

For $800 or less you are looking at a very finite market for what you would like inside the laptop. Any 17.3" is going to have around an i3 processor with no discrete graphics, and most of the 15.6" that have discrete graphics (and by that I mean gt 610m for most of them) have a 2nd gen intel processor. If you can up your budget just a little, there is the Sager NP6165 ($869 +shipping) and it will net you a 15.6" FHD 1080p screen, 3rd gen i5, discrete GT 650m graphics, 8Gb of ram and more ( http/www.xoticpc.com/sager-np6165-clevo-w150er-p-4344.html ). I understand its more than you set for yourself but for what you are looking for a $900 limit would have been a little better With that there would be a few more doors open to ya as far as what you are looking to do.

That is a viable option as well. It will be able to do basic gaming and be good for school work. Its not going to be as portable nor is it going to have the battery life of the other options however that may not be a problem for ya.

what would be better? I am not finding to many 17.3 inchers with decent dedicated video cards. Heck Id be happy if I could find a 17.3 with a decent processor and a 7670m. I dunno if I can do more then 842 the wife might kill me lol

Now, the 7670M can xfire with the 7660G, pushing the graphics power up to roughly the GT 650M I believe, which is a capable mobile graphics card.


I myself would like to know more about the CPU unit on the A10-4600M, as, coincidentally, I'm also looking for a laptop under 800 dollars for a friend.

Also, if you get the HP laptop, I would recommend you buy another stick of 4GB RAM (But install it yourself, don't buy it custom from HP. It's cheaper), and to also opt for the better screen, which I believe is 150 dollars more. EDIT: just checked, the 17.3" doesn't offer a better screen. Ignore that.


Also, I think the 10 dollar upgrade from a 5400 rpm hdd to a 7200 rpm hdd is worth the 10 dollars.

thats one thing I was thinking to it should have both video cards alowing xfire them which would be SWEET and the ram heck yeah if I did get it Id be going on tiger or new egg and buying a stick of 4 or if it can handle it 2 8 gigs (but I doubt it can handle that)

I believe it can, but anything over 8gb, especially for a laptop, is overkill.

There you go. The dual vid option may be more to what you are looking for. I've never personally had the need for it as I do not play graphically intense games and the ones I do I dont mind playing on low settings. But all in all it's your money and both are good options and within your budget. Hope we all helped you come to a good conclusion

I dont plan on doing any heavy duty gaming but love the option i have my desktop for gaming but if I am in class or at the inlaws and bored it give s me something to do lol
