I watch most of my movies and TV shows through files stored on my PC but want to watch them on the big screen. I can transfer the files on to an external hard drive or memory stick but the display is quite simple and has no way of playing directly from a USB port. Is there a way I can have the files on my PC played on my TV- a bit like an apple TV?

Depends on the distance (between your TV and PC) and the type of TV.

The easiest solution would be to connect your TV to your PC using a HDMI/DP cable.

A more complex solution would be to create a shared folder on your PC and then navigate there with your TV, but if your TV cannot browse a USB this is probably also not possible.

More complex solutions would be something like RARRAF is doing, though in the long run it will make everything a lot easier. I like VLC streamer though it requires content to be in MP4 format.

Many ways to acheive this

Connect with a cable

Use a chromecast to do screen mirroring

Use something like a intel compute stick or the asus thin(forgotten the name ._.)
These act as individual computers that use can insert a usb drive and do most things
