We have all read THG article about altering an AMD cpu ITSELF to unlock it so it can be overclocked; however, I ran across
this statement in a review of A7N8X:

"The advantage that many of the KT400 motherboards have over the nForce2 motherboards is the ability to change the multiplier of an Athlon XP processor without having to modify the CPU at all – this is something that doesn’t exist on the nForce2 chipset that I can see. (If you want to see more on that feature of the KT400 chipset, see my KT400 roundup.)" "Update: I have gotten a few emails saying that the A7N8X does in fact unlock the processors like the KT400 motherboards do. I am in the process of updating my bios and testing this out. Thanks to those who wrote in!"

The above is from an article on the A7N8X by Ryan Shrout on amdmb.com that was last updated 26DEC2002

WHAT IS THE CORRECT STORY????????????????

I posted this item before and received no definitive answer.

Yes it does. I just changed the CPU multiplier from Auto to Menu with no doctoring on the chip and it set fine. Currently running my 2600+ at 2148 (12.0 * 179).

forgive the ignorant question but how can I tell if I have a thorobred cpu? I bought an xp 1700 oem for my a7n8x and might be interested in oc'ing it in the future.

My rig:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD Athlon XP1700
Abit Siluro GForce2 AGP
2x 256m crucial ram

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it'll be green instead of earth tonish and of course the core is smaller and veritcal?

Nope, my Palomino is green. You have to look at the core. If it is rectangular its a thoroughbree but if its square its a palomino, The difference is quite obvious.

Triple post?? Awesome!!! LoL

Also.....there will not be any writting on the CPU Die itself...instead there will be a sticker on the side of the packaging with all the chips details....

I bought an oem with no packaging so I don't exactly know what the specs are but it is a browinsh color with a vertical chip in the center.

I have an a7n8x with a 2700+ and it did not automaticly unlock the multiplier. I don't know why, it wouldnt even let me into bios, had to clear cmos, ive tried multiple times.
